Esports betting means betting on professional video game competitions, mostly Counter-Strike 2 (CS2), Dota 2, League of Legends (LoL) and Valorant. The markets mirror traditional sports: match winner, handicaps on maps, totals on rounds or kills, and outrights on tournaments, plus in-game props such as first blood. What differs is the structure of each game and the integrity risks of a young industry. Esports betting is for adults only (18+, or older where local law says so), even though many fans are younger.
Which esports can you bet on?
| Title | Format | Typical series | Popular markets |
|---|---|---|---|
| Counter-Strike 2 | 5 v 5 tactical shooter; a map is first to 13 rounds (MR12) | Best of 1, 3 or 5 maps | Match winner, map handicap, total maps, map winner, total rounds, pistol round |
| Dota 2 | 5 v 5 strategy (MOBA); destroy the enemy Ancient | Best of 2, 3 or 5 | Match and map winner, total kills, first blood, Roshan, game duration |
| League of Legends | 5 v 5 MOBA; destroy the enemy Nexus | Best of 1, 3 or 5 | Match and map winner, total kills, first dragon, first Baron, first tower |
| Valorant | 5 v 5 tactical shooter; first to 13 rounds, win by two in overtime | Best of 3 or 5 | Match winner, map handicap, total rounds, map winner |
International sportsbooks also price smaller titles such as Rainbow Six Siege, Rocket League, StarCraft II and mobile titles, as well as “e-football” and “e-basketball” simulations. Those virtual-sport style products are a different thing: short games played by individuals in a studio, with much less information available to bettors.
How do map handicaps work?
In a best-of-three series, map handicaps work like set handicaps in tennis. Backing Team A −1.5 maps wins only if A wins 2-0. Backing Team B +1.5 maps wins if B takes at least one map. A best-of-two Dota 2 series can end 1-1, so the match market there has three outcomes (Team A, draw, Team B), which is worth checking before you bet.
Worked example: match winner versus map handicap
Team A is 1.45 to win a best-of-three CS2 series, Team B 2.70. On the map handicap, A −1.5 is 2.20 and B +1.5 is 1.62 (illustrative prices). If you think A is clearly stronger but B can steal a map on its own map pick, B +1.5 at 1.62 suits that view: it pays on 2-1 to A, 2-1 to B and 2-0 to B. Should A win easily, A −1.5 at 2.20 pays 50% more than the match price of 1.45 but loses on any 2-1. Staked at €20, the bets return €44 on A −1.5 (if it ends 2-0), €29 on the match winner, or €32.40 on B +1.5.
How do round and kill totals settle?
CS2 maps are played to 13 rounds in regulation (the MR12 format Valve introduced with CS2 in 2023, a maximum of 24 regulation rounds). If the map is tied 12-12, overtime is played in short halves until one team wins. Valorant is also first to 13 rounds, and at 12-12 overtime continues until a team leads by two. Round totals on a map normally include overtime rounds, so a close map can push a total well past the usual line.
Example: you bet over 21.5 total rounds on a CS2 map. A 13-9 result is 22 rounds and wins; 13-8 is 21 and loses. A 16-14 overtime map is 30 rounds and wins easily. In Dota 2 and LoL, kill totals depend heavily on team style and patch: aggressive teams and short, chaotic games produce high totals, while controlled games with an early lead can end with few kills.
What settlement rules are specific to esports?
| Situation | Usual treatment | Check in the rules |
|---|---|---|
| Technical pause or replayed map | Bets settle on the official result after the replay | Whether a remake from scratch voids in-game props |
| Team substitution or stand-in | Match bets usually stand | Some books void if the line-up changes before start |
| Forfeit or walkover | Often void, sometimes settled on the official result | The forfeit rule differs widely |
| Map awarded by the organiser | Settled on the official score at many books | Whether round or kill props on that map are void |
| Best-of-two draw | A three-way market includes the draw | Two-way markets may void on a draw |
Because there is less standardisation than in football or tennis, the esports section of a bookmaker’s betting rules deserves a careful read. Settlement is usually on the official result published by the tournament organiser.
Is esports betting fair? Integrity and match-fixing
Esports has had real integrity problems: match-fixing at lower tiers, misuse of inside information, and cheating. The Esports Integrity Commission (ESIC) is the main independent body. It works with tournament organisers, publishers and betting operators to investigate suspicious betting and to sanction players and officials, and it publishes its decisions. Bookmakers that share data with integrity bodies can spot unusual betting patterns quickly, which is one reason prices on small events are limited or pulled.
For bettors, the practical points are simple. Prefer top-tier events with established organisers. Treat sharp, unexplained line moves on minor matches as a warning sign rather than a tip. And be wary of anyone selling “fixed match” information: it is either a scam or a crime, and often both.
Why should you avoid skins gambling sites?
Skins are cosmetic in-game items, such as CS2 weapon skins, that can be traded and have real-money value. A large unlicensed market grew up around betting skins on matches and casino-style games, often accessible to minors. Regulators have acted against it: the Washington State Gambling Commission ordered Valve in 2016 to stop its platform being used for skin gambling, and in 2017 the UK Gambling Commission prosecuted the operators of a site offering gambling with FIFA in-game coins. Skins sites usually hold no gambling licence, offer no player protection and no complaint route. If you bet on esports, use a licensed sportsbook and real money, and check its licence with our licence check guide.
How do esports outright and tournament bets work?
Outright markets cover tournament winners, group winners, “to reach the play-offs” and sometimes most valuable player awards. Esports tournaments often combine a group stage or Swiss stage with a single-elimination bracket, and the format matters: in a Swiss stage teams play opponents with the same record, so a strong team can still be eliminated by two bad best-of-one results. Read the format on the organiser’s site before pricing an outright, and check the bookmaker’s rule on what happens if a team withdraws or changes its line-up before the event. As with other sports, outright books carry a larger total margin than single matches, so compare the price of your team across several bookmakers.
What does the esports calendar look like?
Each title runs its own circuit. CS2 has two Valve-sponsored Majors a year plus a busy tour of other top-tier events; Dota 2 builds towards The International; League of Legends has regional leagues in spring and summer and the World Championship in the autumn; Valorant’s top tier runs through regional leagues to an annual Champions event. Dates and venues are set by the publishers and organisers and change from year to year, so check the official announcements rather than third-party calendars.
How does live esports betting work?
Esports suits in-play betting because the state of the game is visible on the official stream: gold or economy leads, kills, objectives. Prices move after every round in CS2 and Valorant and after every major fight in Dota 2 and LoL. Two cautions apply. Streams run with a broadcast delay (often deliberately, to stop teams watching their opponents), so bookmakers with direct data feeds see events before you do. And in-play margins are wider than pre-match. Our live betting guide explains bet delays and cash-out pricing.
How do you research an esports match?
- Map pool (CS2, Valorant): teams pick and ban maps; a team’s record on its likely picks matters more than its overall ranking.
- Patch (Dota 2, LoL): balance updates change which heroes or champions are strong, and some teams adapt faster.
- Roster changes: a new player or stand-in can change a team’s level overnight; check official team announcements.
- Format and stage: best of one is far more random than best of three; group-stage motivation differs from play-offs.
- Online or LAN: some teams perform very differently on stage in front of a crowd than online.
- Travel and schedule: teams playing several series in a day or after long travel may underperform, and visa problems occasionally force stand-ins at international events.
What does esports betting cost?
Margins on major esports matches are often a little higher than on top football matches, and much higher on minor events and props. Check by converting both sides of a match to implied probabilities, as explained on the betting odds explained page. Two-way match markets on a big event might total around 105% to 107%; obscure props can be far higher. Limits on small events are low, and some bookmakers remove markets entirely when betting looks suspicious.
Esports markets also suit the bet types covered on our bet types page: handicaps, totals and outrights. Bonus terms usually allow esports bets if the minimum odds are met, but check the rules before using a welcome offer; the bonuses guide explains rollover maths. For where to bet, our bookmaker reviews list sportsbooks we have checked for bettors outside the US and UK.
Frequently asked questions
Is esports betting legal?
It depends on where you live. Esports betting is a form of sports betting, so it is legal only where sports betting is legal and only with a bookmaker licensed for your country. Skins gambling sites are usually unlicensed everywhere.
What is map handicap in CS2 betting?
It is a head start or deficit in maps. In a best-of-three series, −1.5 maps means the team must win 2-0, and +1.5 maps means the team must win at least one map. It works like a set handicap in tennis.
Do overtime rounds count in CS2 total rounds bets?
At most bookmakers, yes: round totals on a map include overtime rounds played after a 12-12 tie. Check the market rules, because a few bookmakers offer regulation-only lines.
What is ESIC?
ESIC, the Esports Integrity Commission, is an independent body that investigates cheating, match-fixing and betting-related corruption in esports. It works with tournament organisers, game publishers and betting operators, and publishes sanctions against players and officials.
Why are esports betting limits low?
Smaller esports events attract little betting volume and carry higher integrity risk, so bookmakers protect themselves with low maximum stakes. Limits on top-tier tournaments are usually higher than on qualifiers and online leagues.
Can I bet on esports with skins?
Not at licensed bookmakers. Skins betting sites usually operate without a gambling licence, and regulators have acted against them. Licensed sportsbooks take real-money deposits and must apply age and identity checks.
