Betting Bonuses Explained: What the Rollover Really Costs

How deposit matches, free bets, reloads and acca boosts work, with rollover maths on real October 2026 terms so you can see what a bonus is worth.

A sports betting bonus is extra money or a free bet a bookmaker gives you for depositing or betting, but it comes with a rollover: you must bet a set amount, at minimum odds, within a time limit, before you can withdraw. The headline number (“100% up to €400”) says little on its own. What decides the value is the rollover multiple, what counts towards it and the margin you pay on every bet you place to clear it. This page works through real terms we re-read on 15 October 2026.

What kinds of betting bonuses are there?

Bonus type How it works Typical catch
Deposit match Bookmaker adds a percentage of your first deposit as bonus funds Rollover on deposit plus bonus, minimum odds, deadline
Free bet A token to place one bet of a fixed size Stake not returned with winnings; minimum odds
Reload A deposit match for existing customers Same rollover rules as the welcome offer, often smaller
Acca boost or acca bonus Extra percentage on the winnings of multiples Minimum number of legs and odds per leg
Combo or acca insurance Stake refunded if one leg of a multiple loses Refund often paid as a free bet, not cash
Cashback A share of net losses returned over a period Paid as bonus money or free bets with their own rules

How does a sports welcome bonus rollover work?

The rollover (or wagering requirement) is the amount you must bet before bonus money becomes withdrawable. It is expressed as a multiple of the bonus, or of deposit plus bonus, and only bets that meet the conditions count. Reblz’s sports welcome is a good example of a complete set of terms: 100% up to €400 on the first sports deposit with code WELCOME400, minimum deposit €20, deposit plus bonus wagered 6 times at odds of 1.50 or higher within 21 days, with a maximum conversion of 10 times the bonus.

Worked example: clearing a 6x deposit-plus-bonus rollover

Deposit €100 and receive €100. The rollover is (€100 + €100) × 6 = €1,200 of qualifying bets. Two rules shape how you get there. Each bet must be at 1.50 or higher (each leg, for combos). And only up to 20% of the awarded bonus counts per bet: with a €100 bonus, a single €200 bet counts only €20. To reach €1,200 you therefore need at least 60 counted bets of €20 or more. Cashed-out, void and partly void bets do not count at all.

Now the cost. If the bets you place carry a typical 5% margin, the expected loss on €1,200 of turnover is about €60. Set that against the €100 bonus and the expected value is roughly +€40, before you count the swings: at odds near 2.00 you will often lose a run of bets and burn through the deposit before finishing. Higher-margin markets wipe the value out fast. At 8% (common on props and accas) the expected cost is €96, close to the whole bonus.

The same terms on a bigger deposit

Bet Inferno’s sports welcome uses an identical structure: 100% up to €250 with code WELCOME250, the same 6x deposit-plus-bonus rollover, 1.50 minimum odds, 20% per-bet cap, 10x maximum conversion and 21 days, and it is not available to residents of Finland. Deposit €250 for the full €250 and the rollover becomes €3,000. At 5% margin the expected cost is €150 against a €250 bonus. You need at least 60 counted bets of €50 to clear it, all within three weeks.

Deposit (100% match) Rollover at 6x deposit + bonus Max counted per bet (20% of bonus) Expected cost at 5% margin Expected value
€20 €240 €4 €12 +€8
€50 €600 €10 €30 +€20
€100 €1,200 €20 €60 +€40
€250 €3,000 €50 €150 +€100
€400 €4,800 €80 €240 +€160

The expected value scales with the deposit, but so does the time and turnover you must commit. Most players who claim a large bonus do not finish the rollover, because a bad run empties the balance first or the 21 days run out.

Why the rollover basis matters

A low multiple can be expensive if it applies to deposit plus bonus, and a high multiple can be fair if it applies to the bonus alone. Tenobet’s sports package (300% up to €3,000 over three deposits: 100% up to €500, €1,000 and €1,500) is labelled “Wager: 5x” on its promotions page, which does not state the basis. On the first €500 bonus that is €2,500 of betting if 5x applies to the bonus only, or €5,000 if it applies to deposit plus bonus. Ask support or read the full bonus terms before you deposit, and note that Tenobet’s general terms also cap withdrawals at €1,000 a day and €10,000 a month.

How much is a free bet really worth?

A free bet is not cash. When it wins, you receive the winnings but not the stake. A €10 free bet at 3.00 that wins pays €20, not €30. Its expected value depends on the odds you use and the margin on the market: roughly (decimal odds − 1) ÷ decimal odds × (1 − margin) × face value.

Odds used Paid on a win (€10 free bet) Expected value at 5% margin
1.50 €5.00 €3.17
2.00 €10.00 €4.75
3.00 €20.00 €6.33
5.00 €40.00 €7.60
8.00 €70.00 €8.31

Longer odds squeeze more value out of a free bet because less of the token is “lost” with the stake, at the price of winning less often. Foxy Gold’s sports welcome illustrates the format: deposit €20 or more for the first time and receive a €10 free bet, minimum odds 1.5, valid for 7 days, with winnings paid as cash and no wagering. Used at 1.50 it is worth about €3; used at 4.00 or above, nearer €7.

How likely are you to finish a rollover?

Expected value assumes you complete the wagering. In practice your balance swings, and if it hits zero the bonus is gone. Take the €100 + €100 example and bet €20 singles at 2.00 to clear €1,200. That is 60 bets, and at a 5% margin each bet wins with a probability of about 47.5%. Over 60 bets the standard deviation of your result is about €155 (20 × √60), far larger than the €60 expected cost. A run of early losses can wipe out the €200 balance well before bet 60, which happens to a large share of players who start such a rollover.

Shorter odds reduce the swings (at 1.50 you win more often but the 1.50 minimum also means each counted bet returns less), and smaller stakes stretch the balance at the cost of needing more bets. Neither changes the expected cost; they change how often you reach the end. If you would be unhappy to lose the deposit while chasing the bonus, the bonus is not for you.

What about reloads, cashback and VIP rewards?

Ongoing offers are smaller but often easier to use. Reblz, for example, advertises a daily free bet worth 10% of your first bet of the day up to €40, and weekly cashback paid in free bets based on betting activity. Stake has no fixed welcome match and instead rewards volume through its VIP programme and rakeback. BC.Game pays its monthly four-deposit bonus into locked rakeback that is released as you bet. Value these the same way: what form is the reward paid in (cash, bonus money or free bets), what conditions come with it, and how much betting it asks for. A reward that only pays out if you bet more than you planned is a cost, not a gift.

Are acca boosts and acca insurance good value?

An acca boost adds a percentage to the winnings of a multiple, typically more for more legs. Remember what the legs cost you first: at a 5% margin per leg, a five-fold already gives up about 22.6% in expected terms (the bet types page shows the table). A 10% boost on the winnings does not come close to closing that gap. Boosts make accas you were going to place anyway a little cheaper; they do not make accas a good bet.

Insurance (stake back if one leg loses) is worth more on long accumulators, where “one leg lost” is a common result. Check whether the refund is cash, bonus money or a free bet, because a free-bet refund is worth only part of its face value, as the table above shows.

What rules catch bettors out?

  • Minimum odds per leg: a combo only counts if every leg meets the minimum.
  • Per-bet caps: big single bets count only up to a fixed amount, like the 20% rule above.
  • Excluded bets: cashed-out, void and partly void bets usually do not count.
  • Withdrawal before completion: at Reblz and Bet Inferno, withdrawing real funds before the rollover is complete forfeits the bonus.
  • Payment method exclusions: some bookmakers exclude e-wallet deposits from bonuses; check before you choose a method (see payment methods).
  • Maximum conversion: the most bonus money you can turn into cash, for example 10 times the bonus.
  • Linked offers: Bet Inferno’s terms say claiming the sports offer also claims any casino welcome offer on the account.
  • One bonus per person: multiple accounts or matched betting patterns can lead to the bonus being removed.

When should you decline a bonus?

Declining is often the better choice. Skip the bonus if you plan to bet mainly on short odds below the minimum, if you want to withdraw winnings quickly, if your stakes are large compared with the per-bet cap, or if you bet on markets with high margins where the rollover cost swallows the bonus. Also skip it if the terms are incomplete: a bonus whose rollover basis, deadline or minimum odds you cannot find is a bonus you cannot value. A smaller deposit without a bonus, at a bookmaker with tight margins, usually beats a large match with a heavy rollover.

A bonus is also a reason to check the bookmaker itself. Big welcome numbers are common at newer and offshore brands; licence, withdrawal limits and complaint routes matter more, and our bookmaker checklist and licence check guide cover them.

Frequently asked questions

What does 6x wagering mean on a sports bonus?

It means you must place qualifying bets worth six times the amount the rule names before you can withdraw. If the rule says deposit plus bonus, a €100 deposit and €100 bonus need €1,200 of bets at or above the minimum odds within the time limit.

Are betting bonuses worth it?

Sometimes. A bonus has positive expected value when the bonus amount is larger than the expected cost of the betting needed to clear it. At a 5% margin, a 100% match with a 6x deposit-plus-bonus rollover is worth about 40% of the bonus on average, but many players do not finish the rollover.

Is a free bet stake returned?

Usually not. A winning free bet pays the winnings only, so a €10 free bet at 3.00 returns €20. Some promotions are sold as “money back as cash”, which is different; the terms say which one applies.

What odds should I use a free bet on?

Longer odds keep more of a free bet’s value, because you lose the stake either way. At a 5% margin a €10 free bet is worth about €4.75 at 2.00 and about €7.60 at 5.00, so prices from roughly 3.00 to 6.00 are a common choice.

Can I withdraw before finishing the rollover?

You can withdraw your real money, but at many bookmakers that cancels the bonus and any winnings from it. Reblz and Bet Inferno both state that withdrawing real funds before completing wagering means losing the bonus.

Do cashed-out bets count towards wagering?

Often not. Reblz and Bet Inferno exclude cashed-out, void and partly voided bets from the rollover. Check the bookmaker’s bonus terms before you cash out a bet you placed to clear a bonus.
